Instructions

Hello people... start posting your findings for your respective research areas (Sichuan/Haiti)! You may post your findings by commenting on this post. I should see at least 9 comments since there're 9 groups.

If you're a total tech idiot, then print your group's research findings and submit at my pigeon hole by Wed (9 March) 5pm. :):):)

The epicentre is located at Wenchuan, 80km of Chengdu which is the capital of Sinchuan. The earthquake of magnitude 8.5 according to the Richter magnitude scale was felt in Beijing and China which were as far as 1700 km. The focal depth of the Sichuan Earthquake was measured to be 19km.Occured along the Longmenshan Fault formed between the Australian and Eurasian plates.

    Some of the countries affected/experienced slight tremors;

    China
    Hong Kong
    Macau
    Vietnam
    Thailand
    Taiwan
    Mongolia
    Bangladesh
    Nepal
    India
    Pakistan
    Russia

(err i dono wheter is enough)

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake
The quake occurred in the vicinity of the northern boundary where the Caribbean tectonic plate shifts eastwards by about 20 millimetres (0.79 in) per year in relation to the North American plate.

The level of preparedness was low in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Most buildings in the area had a low level of earthquake resistance partly because building design codes for Wenchuan did not specify a sufficient level, particularly in rural parts. In addition, traditional buildings near the epicentre were constructed of stone masonry walls or rammed earth, which provide little seismic resistance.

    HAITI

LEVEL OF PREPAREDNLESS : Very very LOW

Haiti is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. The country is, by a significant margin, the poorest in the Western Hemisphere, with four out of five people living in poverty and more than half in abject poverty. Deforestation and over-farming have left much of Haiti eroded and barren, undermining subsistence farming efforts, driving up food prices and leaving the country even MORE VULNERABLE TO NATURAL DISASTERS. Its long history of political instability and corruption has added to the turmoil.

Its weak infrastructure is also one of the reasons why the Haiti earthquake caused such tremendous destructions.

  5. Population density- Si Chuan Earthquake 2008

The Sichuan earthquake was a catastrophic earthquake that full demonstrated the power that earthquakes have. It also showed how poor building design and construction, large earthquake strength, high population density and shallow earthquake depth can all combine to create a disaster.
Sichuan is a large province in China in terms of population size. Its total population was
83.29 million In 2000, ranking the fourth after Henan, Shandong and Guangdong Provinces.
The Sichuan population is characterized by high density and extremely uneven distribution, with more population in the east and less in the west. In 2000, the population density was 172 persons/km2. Sichuan province including Chongqing is China's Rice Bowl; by far it’s most populated province, with roughly 10% of China's population, approximately 1 out of every 50 people on this earth live in Sichuan, with the overwhelming majority being poor, rural peasants.
Initial death tolls ran at 8,700 but this eventually rose to 69,000 with 18,000 people missing two months after the quake. 374,000 people were injured and between 5 million and 11 million people were made homeless. Approximately 15 million people lived in the affected area and as more people lived there, more casualties happened.

  6. Population density

Lex Phua , Chee Liang , Bryan , tengke

     - Density 350.27/km2
Population density (people per km^2) by country,

33th country on the population density list
    before earthquake
    Haiti 10,033,000 citizens
    Surface area 27,750km^2
    population density
    362   people/km^2

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti and devastated the capital city, Port-au-Prince. Although the exact number was difficult to determine, an estimated 316,000 people were killed.

    After earthquake
    Population
     - 2011 estimate 9,719,932 (87th)
    Population density
     - Density 350.27/km^2

Density compared to before earthquake : -11.73/ km^2

Thus when a lot of people die, the population density decreases.
